Lion
The lion, known as the "King of the Beasts," was the first foreign
wild animal exhibited in the United States on September 26, 1720.
Known mainly for their noble appearance, lions are the only wild
cats that live in groups ("prides"), with 1 male and 4 or 5 females.
The female lions hunt for the pride, but the male eats first at meal
time. Lions are carnivorous (meat eaters). They will eat whatever
is plentiful and can be caught, except for hippopotamus, elephants,
and rhinoceros. An adult male can weigh up to 500 pounds,
stand 3 feet high, and be 7 feet long. The roar of a lion after
sunset is truly an awesome sound.
